Ground breaking. Earth shattering. Huge strides are being made at this years New York Fashion Week. The first  plus size fashion show will be historic for the annual event and hopefully help add a little fire to the industry as a whole. Steps the same size as the traditionally unrealistic models of yesteryears have been made. Ex-supermodel Tyra Banks named Whitney Thompson the first “fiercely real” winner of her hit reality series America’s Next Top Model in cycle 10. Conde Nast’s Glamour received accolades, and a few raised eyebrows, for featuring nude photographs of the curvaceous model Grace St. John in their August 2009 edition. The largest criticism is that high fashion is dragging its feet in embracing larger ideas of beauty. Some skeptics wonder will the fashion world ever come around to include models who wear sizes 12 and up.

Despite the show not officially being apart of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week events, its nice to see efforts being made to be more inclusive. The show will be held September 15 at Lincoln Center in the Frederick P. Rose Hall.

Is the fashion industry warming up to larger sizes? Do you think ultimately fashion will simply be fashion, regardless of the sizes of the models? Or do you think the industry will stubbornly neglect those women with a little extra junk in the trunk?
