Uber teams up with Spotify for A More Personalized Ride

uberspotify_thebobbypenUnless you’ve been living under a rock in the middle of nowhere chances are you’ve heard of both Uber and Spotify.  Uber being the handy app that allows you to book a ride from A to B, schedule it and even let you know the estimated time of arrival. This has caught on in many cities as it’s more convenient than catching a cab.

Spotify leaped out of the pack of internet radio streaming services, as it allows for playlists that you can fully customize and follow artists and see what playlists they have, so it has added more of a social aspect to streaming music. Well, now the two popular companies have teamed up to allow you to control the music in your Uber via Spotify.

Here’s the Skinny

When you request an Uber, you can now also choose what type of music is played on your ride. Pretty cool right?  How often have you been in someone else’s car and they’ve played music you didn’t want to hear?  Or imagine if you and the girls are headed for a night out on the town and want to get amped up, you can queue up your party playlist when you book the ride.

Now this feature is only available to Spotify premium (paid) users and will work on both iOS and Android upon launch on November 21.  It will launch in 10 cities initially and roll out to more markets over the next month or so.  There has been no word on the order in which other major cities will get this feature yet.

Where Can I Use this Feature?

The 10 initial launch cities are, Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York, Nashville, London, San Francisco, Toronto, Sydney, Stockholm, and Singapore.  They will also have artists participating in the global launch events, doing things like  ride alongs and live sessions.  Some of these artists include, Jake Owens, Andrew W.K., and Kevin Drew to name a few.  How cool would it be to request an Uber and your favorite artist is in the ride?

Setting it up is fairly simple:

  1. Connect your Spotify account to your Uber profile (do this from within the Uber application)
  2. Request a ride, and if your ride is Spotify enabled, a music bar will show up
  3. Tap the music bar, and you can use a premade Spotify list or whatever music you are in the mood for
  4. Enjoy!
This feature works as long as you are in the Uber ride.

This appears to be a win on both sides, and Uber was already slowly taking down taxi cabs in major cities and Spotify is the go to music listening medium for a lot of mobile listeners and further enhances your social experience that you are getting from the application. The question remains will this cause tensions between the driver and the rider, or is this just a really good partnership?  Will this bring over more users to Spotify premium?  Do you care what music is being played as long as you get to your destination safely and on time?  No word on if Spotify is going to push a free trial so that non-premium users can test this out or not but that would be nice.  So will you be using your Spotify playlist the next time you book an Uber ride?
