The First Family’s First Date Now a Film: “Southside With You”

barack-michelle-obama-thebobbypenLegend has it, the summer of 1989 was huge for our 44th president– so huge that it’s worthy of the silver screen. One afternoon, a 28-year-old Barack Obama set out to squire his future First Lady around and about Chicago’s Southside, ultimately sweeping her off her feet. The cinematic romantic tale of how then 25-year-old recent Harvard Law grad Michelle Robinson fell for the summer associate and her mentee, “Southside With You,” is set to begin taping next July.

Actress Tika Sumpter (OWN’s The Have and the Have Nots) will play the role of Michelle for the indie film directed by Richard Tanne. While we may not be as familiar with his work, the film’s producers are.

The Huffington Post puts it this way: The indie film has a relative unknown in the director’s chair, but it has a double dose of veteran executive producing talent from women of color: Tracey Bing, a former executive from Warner Independent, and Stephanie Allain, the indie producer behind films like “Hustle & Flow” and “Black Snake Moan.”

The actor who will portray Barack has not  yet been selected, but it is rumored that possible options include rapper Drake, actor Michael B. Jordan or SNL impersonator Jay Pharoah.  While it still seems to be just an idea, I’m excited to watch this film progress and I’ll be excited to see it once it’s released in 2016.

Think you’ll plan to catch it? Why or why not?
