Brooklyn_14 (1 of 1)-12Best known for her keep-it-real antics on reality TV series Love & Hip-Hop Atalanta, singer K. Michelle returns to VH1 in R&B Opera directed by Idris Elba.

The Rebellious Soul Musical premiered Tuesday night, but on Monday I got the opportunity to attend the sneak peak in Manhattan’s Bryant Park Hotel Theater. Along with Atlantic Records and VH1 executives, K. Michelle attended and shared with us the process to get the green light.

She said she feels her story can help young girls and was prepared to kick in the doors at VH1 to have them hear her idea. She also shared how the multi-talented Elba encouraged her to think outside of the box when shooting the different scenes reflective of a dramatic take on twelve singles from her debut album “Rebellious Soul”– which debuted at No. 2 and No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums and R&B/Hip-Hop albums charts last year.

She jokingly recalls, “I wanted to shoot the strip club scene in a strip club, but Idris said, ‘No. Everyone does that.’ He was so handsome I just went along with whatever he said.”

Brooklyn_14 (1 of 1)-15The event was hosted by Jack Daniel’s Honey, a drink we’ve seen Michelle drink one too many of on LHHA.

I enjoyed the 30-minute musical mainly for the cinematography. Each scene was well shot and I appreciated the creative value in each scene’s interpretation. If you’ve ever been to a live show, you know K. Michelle is very open with sharing her story of struggle to redemption, so I wasn’t completely blown away by the story line.

The first song, “My Life,” had me and my home girl bouncing though. I’d certainly download the soundtrack.

Did you watch the premier? If not, check it out here and tell me what you think!
