ConcertforaCause for TheBobbyPen.comWeTV joined forces with NAACP to support childhood literacy with “Concert for a Cause.” Howard University’s Cramton Auditorium was transformed into a star-studded affair, featuring the stars of top Reality TV series produced by the women’s network. Traci Braxton of Braxton Family Values, Eric Campbell of Mary Mary and 90’s girl group SWV of SWV Reunited headlined the show to amplify the urgent need to increase grade-level reading proficiency within communities of color.

The event raised awareness for NAACP’s grade-level reading campaign “NAACP Reads,” which aims to reinforce the importance of early literacy development in the effort to increase third grade-level reading proficiency for African American and low-income students. Host Alfredis of 93.9 WKYS’s Russ Parr Morning Show, introduced the the campaign by presenting Cornell William Brooks, NAACP President and CEO and Marc Juris, WE tv President. These two then kicked us to a provoking video illustrating the need for communities to speak and read to it’s young students immediately to encourage high scholastic achievement.

ConcertforaCause for TheBobbyPen.comWhile the show was fun and engaging overall, and Erica and SWV’s vocals were on point! Traci Braxton stole the show with a rather bizarre performance. As we know, Traci has been wanting to take center stage, and step from her sister’s shadow, I was excited to watch her first solo performance– ever. Sadly, I found myself confused and humored more than fawning over her vocals or performance style. She was dancing around the stage awkwardly, she brought out her husband Kevin of We TV’s Celebrity Marriage Boot Camp and gave him a full-on lap dance and even got upset with the crowd for not singing along to her current single “Last Call.”

Thank God she went on first and Erica was able to redirect the crowds energy and bring a soul-stirring set to offer fans a little “Help,” her debut solo gospel album. By the time she took us up in song and prayed our strength, we were all pumped up for SWV. These classy ladies came out and performed all their hits, from Human Nature to I’m So Into You to Weak. Check out their performance here.
