Yesterday after church, I had a really great day out with an old friend who introduced to me to things that had been right under my nose for years. I’d like to think I’m pretty adventurous and well traveled in the DC metropolitan area. Yesterday I learned I have no idea what DC really has to offer.

First Finding:

FOOD

I love food. A lot. I remember when I was younger, probably about 10 years old, I was at the diner table at a restaurant we would visit often (almost weekly) with my aunt ordering my meal. This time I broke away from my typical chicken fingers and fries, that day I professed “I want to try all the food in the world.” That statement was a tad extreme, but the sentiments still ring true. Unfortunately, I’ve become comfortable with going to the same places, reading descriptions and try “new” things with the same “old” ingredients. What’s new about that? Well yesterday, I stepped out of that box and found myself on 11th & U Streets NW Washington, DC at The Famous Madjet Restaurant. A quiet and intimate Ethiopian restaurant; 1 of about 6 in the U Street corridor. The proprietor and cook welcomed us and personally greeted my companion who he knows well. The hostess sat us at a table against a mirrored wall, and asked us our drink order. My friend suggested Honey Wine and since I hadn’t tried it before, I agreed. Next, was the tough decision of ordering my meal since I wans’t familiar with the country’s cuisine. I went with the lamb tips– I have beef often, and chicken is like cheating, so I figured I’d give the lamb a shot. My friend ordered lamb as well, but a spicier version of my meal, and let me add that it was indeed SPICY. I really enjoyed the idea of sharing, as our orders came out on one large plate, and eating with our hands. On a date, the lack of utensils might make some females uncomfortable, but I think it would take the pressure off since you both have to get down and dirty with the dish.  Below are a few pictures from the restaurant. I will be sure to go back and try something else from the menu, because my food was amazing. I ate my leftovers as soon as I got home!
